1851 ARRIVAL   JAECKEL, Johann Gottlieb   - Arrieved by barque Suzanne, 250 tons, Captain J.C.H. Muller, from Hamburg 29th June 1851, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia 7th October 1851

[Tanunda/Kapunda 87] 1858 NATURALISATION

 For the year or two until they left for Victoria, the Erdmann Jaeckel family was in Light's Pass in the Barossa Valley. They were joined there by other Jaeckels - an older couple, Johann Gottlieb Jaeckel and his wife Marie ELisabeth Jaeckel - who took up land and planted a vineyard, while living in a dugout home up a valley in the marblestone range to the east of the Pass.

They had arrived in South Australia on the ship "Suzanne" in 1851 after leaving Pilgrimsdorf in the Goldberg Valley of Silesia, Prussia. Frau Maria Elisabeth Jaeckel was a traditional Silesian healer, herbalist and midwife. This Jaeckel couple remained in Lights Pass and are buried in the Strait Gate Lutheran Church Cemetery there.

After Mutter Jaeckel died a legend developed that she had been a witch and certain people have imagined that she had appeared to them when walking at night through Lights pass vineyards. Much fun was had retelling this story and Mutter Jaeckel (Mother Jaeckel)is spoken of with hushed tones in the Barossa Valley. These Jaeckels willed their land to their neighbours and friends, such as the Silesian John (Yone)family, so the relation with the Erdmann Jaeckel family cannot have been close.

MUTTER JAECKEL's Winery : -  The locals still speak of the other Jaeckel family who were there early on, and point to a spot covered with vineyards near the current railway line where the Jaeckel house once was. The John family of Light's Pass still own the former Jaeckel land, covered as it is with vineyards, and, in fact, they have a vineyard and wine label registered with the legendary name: "Mutter Jaeckel's. I'll have a bottle to share with any of you as soon as its available... and the toast will be to "Mutter Jaeckel.

1855 ARRIVAL –1 Oct 1855 per ship "WILHELMINE"  Johann Gottlieb JAEKEL family

- EMIGRATED: from Bremerhaven, Bremen, per barque 'WILHELMINE', 300 tons, Captain Kimme, from Bremen 6th June 1855, arrived 1st October 1855 at Port Adelaide, South Australia

 In 1855, about two years after the Erdmann Jaeckel family had left for Victoria, another family of Lower Silesian Jaekel's arrived in South Australia. The emigrated on the ship "WILHELMINE" a 300 ton 3 mast barque, which arrived on the 1st of October 1855 having departed from BREMEN on the 6th of June 1855 under Captain Kimme, (South Australian Register 2 October 1855).

Confusingly, his name was also Johann Gottlieb Jaeckel (1818-1875) & his wife was Anna Dorothea nee Mueller (1821-1908). They arrived with one son, the eldest, and had about five daughters. They came from Janni, near Gruenberg, in Nieder Silesia - in the Oder regions not far where the bulk of the first S.A. German settlers, sometimes known as 'Kavel's People,' also near to Crossen, from where the Metzenthens came in earlier years, as it was the Crossen district the Paechs came from in 1855.

Janni, Gruenberg is at the far western and riverine end of Silesia, and a long way from the Jaeckel's mountainous Silesian region. By chance maybe? they also had links with Light's Pass, or, at least went to the midwife there, for their youngest daughter was born there in 1857. Descendants of this Jaeckel family still live in South Australia and elsewhere.

Johann Gottlieb & Anna Dorothea (nee Mueller) JAECKEL

Their son, 1. Johann Friedrich August Jaekel(1846-1919) married twice, a., to Marie NOACK (1850-1881), and, b., to Sarah Emilie Hirschfeld (1856-1928), and had sixteen (16) children, nine (9) of whom survived to adulthood.
His naturalization records give his places of residence as:  1. Flaxman's Valley near Angaston, 7 years (Oct.1855-1862) [when a sister was born in Lights Pass]; 2.  nearby at Eden Valley 7 years (1862-1869);  3. St Kitts / Tablelands 7 years (1869-1876);  4.  Laura/Booyoolie/Caltowie 22 years, (1876- 1899);  5. Bower about 7 years (1899-1906);  6. Pinnaroo (Parilla Well) 7 -8 years by 1914.

August Jaekel died in Pinnaroo in 1919 and is buried about a mile from the Victorian border in the Pinaroo Cemetery.

The Jaekel daughters all married and became the Fraus:
2. Johanne Rosine Jaekel (1847-1898) wife of Johann Ernst Gottlieb KLICHE (1843-1897);
3. Auguste Ernestine Jaekel (1851-1922), wife of Carl Friedrich Wilhelm PAHL (1849-1927);
4. Johanna Helene Jaekel (1854-1923) wife of Johann Wilhelm REIMANN (1848-1931);
5. Auguste Marie Jaekel (1857-1882) wife of Johann Hermann ROHRLACH (1856-1922); and,
6. Johanne Pauline Caroline Jaekel (1860-1941) wife of Wilhelm LEHMANN (1855-1930);
and one source (the Biographical Index of South Australians) includes a Johanna Jaekel (1862-?)whose husband was named KERNICH, but no births, deaths or marriage data attests to either existence.
The descendants of August Jaeckel (the son) spell their name JAEKEL. The Second son from August's first marriage, C. A. H. or 'Henry' Jaekel went to the Western Australia goldrush and afterwards pioneered Ongerup, a district inland from Esperance, which has a Jaekel Street nearby where his descendants are still.

Another Jaekel son from the second marriage went mining in Broken Hill, N.S.W.

Gottlieb & Anna Dorothea JAEKEL site by Graeme MoadNote: Graeme's site formerly had the wrong Immigration details for this Jaeckel family, but the author has corrected the confusion made between two Johann Gottlieb Jaeckels. This family arrived in 1855 on the ship 'Wilhelmine' - based on the evidence of J.F.August Jaekel's naturalization in 1914. Graeme Moad's site includees these JAECKEL families with dates and places of birth, marriage and death.

TRAGIC JAEKEL TALE: During World War Two, Desmond Nelson Jaekel, one of the many grandsons of August Jaekel, born in Pinnaroo, South Australia, a quick, bright lad with talent and ambition, joined the R.A.A.F. to become a pilot. After soon learning to fly he was sent to Europe and given charge of a Lancaster bomber. After flying many a mission one night on a bombing run of over Germany the aircraft he was pioting was shot down and lost without a survivor. Desmond Nelson Jaekel was nineteen when he died. He is buried with the whole crew in the Doortmund Forst in Central Germany, - a violent and terrible way for any of us to get back to the Jaekel homeland. Such were those times.

John Frederick August Jaekel aka "Frederick Barker"  & Charles August Oscar Jaekel - Estate notice
from Sydney Morning Herald  25 Mar 1963 Sydney, Australia
Newspaper notice regarding the estate of John Frederick August Jaekel reveals that Charles August Oscar Jaekel served in the Australian Navy during the First World War, probably under an assumed name. This was common practice for Australians of German descent to avoid suspicion regarding their allegiances. It explains why records are not available of his marriage or death.

1914 ARRIVAL-  JÄCKEL, Paul Carl - Arrived in Commonwealth 29 May 1914

JACKEL, Paul Karl: Nationality - German: Date of Birth - 1 August 1885: First registered at Berwick 1915/1916 Pakenham  -

Enemy Alien - JAEKEL, Paul Karl –b.1 Aug 1885 Silesia, Germany [Carl] 0 - 22 Jan 1943 - 12 Mar 1945 CAV [Civil Alien Victoria] -Number 3756  - Year of birth 1885  -

Paul Carl JÄCKEL was born in Silesia, Germany on 1st August 1885.

He arrived in Melbourne, Victoria on the brink of war, on 29 May 1914, or about one month before the assasination of the Austrian Hapsburg Archiduke Ferdinand in 29 June 1914, which soon led to the declaration of War on Germany.

Paul Carl Jaeckel was first registered as an Enemy Alien in 1916-1917 at Berwick, Narre Warren District, Victoria where he was working as a labourer. Co-incidently, where members of the wider Jackel clan had pioneered for fifty years. [Civil Alien Victoria, C.A.V. number 3756].

This did nothing to help him. for he was Interned at the Prisoner of War Camp at Langwarren for the duration of the 1st World War. After the tragedy of World War One, he was freed. He became a professional fisherman at Gipsy Point, near Cann River in East Gippsland, where he was known to also befriend men from the nearby Aboriginal community at Lake Tyers. It seems that Paul Jaeckel never married. Unfortunately, living a life of peace and close to nature, he never managed to become naturalised. Maybe, having endured the enmity of his adopted country for any so called allegiance to the homeland he had fled, he thought it impossible to happen again.

After the 2nd World War was declared he was again Interned, in about 1942, this time as a 'slave' compulsory worker, first of all at the Macedon Forest Camp, and then at the Mt Disappointment Forest Camp.

He walked out of that camp one Sunday morning on the 19th May 1945 and threw a rope of the branch over a gum tree and hung himself.

World War Two ended about three months later.

His death at Mt Dissapointment was registered at Kilmore, but he was buried - interred on 20/03/1945 in Area O - in the Preston Cemetery, in northern Melbourne.

The inquest into his death concluded that he had no relatives in Australia.

ONRED RESTAURANT -

We never cease to be awed by what is uncovered by simply looking at real estate listings. Never purporting to be anything other than rank amateurs in the secret world of Australian architectural legacy we nonetheless keenly sense it, trickling just below the surface, only to be fully tapped when a blip rises to our scattered attentions. But hole-y what a blip we have today and what architect have we unearthed for ourselves here? A mid-60s residence, by the mysterious Miles Jakl (oh that name!) in the convivial suburbs of Canberra. Maintaining a distinct richness of craft, materials and scale alining it with southern counterparts in the the MCM playground of Caulfield. The original timber open shelving, exquisite fittings, uncomplicated floorpan, expansive glazing, formal entry and external lines (guaranteed to elicit heart palpitations) all suggest a European émigré sensibility dovetailing with the glorious extravagance and glamour of 1960s ‘entertainers’. But wait, there’s more! For although in a basic search we found verylimited information concerning Jakl himself (has he really relocated to LA?) there is one thing he is recalled for – the Red Hill (AKA Carousel) Cafe (c.1964). Check that! Zowee – some suburban date night locale also happens to be (with utmost deference to Grounds’s Shine Dome) the closest thing we have to a Googie/Lautner spaceship in Canberra. Time to start digging further and planning a road trip we say.
 JAKL'S SPACESHIP -   When you’re in Canberra, it could be worth dining out on Red Hill at architect Miles Jakl’s 1964 spaceship restaurant, reopened in 2007 as Onred .
